Required qualifications

  • MSc in organic chemistry with 1-5 years industry experience or BSc in organic chemistry with 1+ years industry experience.
  • Experience in traditional and contemporary organic synthesis techniques.
  • Familiarity with, or ability to quickly learn, a wide range of techniques and reaction types such as low temperature reactions, inert atmosphere, metal-catalyzed cross coupling, hydrogenation, etc.
  • Experience in reaction monitoring and compound analysis (TLC, LCMS, GCMS, NMR, etc.).
  • Knowledge of purification methods and experience in the characterization of organic compounds, especially NMR and mass spectroscopy.
  • Ability to work safely with potentially hazardous chemicals.
  • Employees must successfully pass a background check and drug test as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Work under the supervision of the Project Manager to achieve project objectives.
  • Conduct multi-step synthesis and optimization through effective reaction planning, effective reagent selection, and systematic analysis.
  • Synthesis of singleton analogs (<10 mg), array synthesis, and moderate scale synthesis (50-100 g).
  • Purification of organic compounds using a variety of techniques including chromatography, extraction, distillation, crystallization, trituration, etc.
  • Analysis and characterization of organic compounds using NMR, LCMS, GCMS, etc.
  • Effectively use Scifinder, Reaxys and other scientific data tools to identify relevant scientific literature precedence to support reaction planning and execution.
  • Work independently to solve problems through careful experimental design, data analysis and mechanistic insight.
  • Independently design reaction conditions to execute and optimize synthetic routes.
  • Interpret and summarize experimental results in a clear and concise manner.
  • Have excellent oral communication skills with a strong ability to communicate scientific results at team discussions. Have excellent written communication skills through clear, concise reporting and by maintaining high quality, accurate electronic scientific notebook records.
  • Participate as a team worker by helping the team to work effectively and coherently by supporting personal relationships and shared goals.

Required qualifications

·      PhD with 3-5 years industrial experience in synthetic chemistry with previous supervisory experience managing 2 or more lab chemists or MSc with 7+ years industry experience in synthetic chemistry and previous supervisory experience managing 2 or more synthetic chemists.

·      Experience in traditional and contemporary organic synthesis techniques.

·      Familiarity with a wide range of techniques and reaction types such as low temperature reactions, inert atmosphere, metal-catalyzed cross coupling, hydrogenation, etc.

·      Capable of independently evaluating synthetic routes and proactive troubleshooting.

·      Experience in reaction monitoring (TLC, LCMS, GCMS, etc.).

·      Ability to work safely with potentially hazardous chemicals.  Ability to lead teams of synthetic chemists that maintain high awareness and compliance with safety protocols.

·      Be highly skilled in practical and theoretical aspects of synthetic organic chemistry.  Have strong understanding of reaction mechanisms and reactivity.

·      Have strong expertise in multi-step synthetic chemistry over a broad range of reaction types, conditions and scale.  Have strong experience in the synthesis, purification, and characterization of chiral compounds.  Be highly skilled in chromatography, crystallization, and other purification techniques.  Be highly skilled in the characterization of organic compounds, especially NMR and mass spectrometry.

·      Be an avid reader of chemical literature with up-to-date knowledge of contemporary and emerging developments in synthesis.

·      Have excellent oral communication skills with a strong ability to communicate scientific results at team discussions.  Have excellent written communication skills through clear, concise reporting and by maintaining high quality, accurate electronic scientific notebook records.

Responsibilities

·      Effectively manage laboratory work of a team of colleagues by fostering a culture of scientific rigor, high productivity, safety, and open communications.  Provide guidance and feedback on reaction set-up, safety protocols, analytical interpretation, and troubleshooting/problem solving while balancing his/her own laboratory deliverables.

·      Work effectively with Project Leaders to assure high productivity and high quality delivery of synthetic targets and project goals.

·      Build and sustain high performing teams by assuring that the team communicates well, helping to make sure that there are no misunderstandings or unexpressed difficulties between team members.  Give and receive effective feedback.

·      Consistently demonstrate effective multi-step synthetic planning, reaction optimization, and delivery through deep synthetic and mechanistic knowledge, awareness of classical, contemporary, and emerging synthetic methods, expertise using literature and scientific databases (SciFinder and Reaxys) and through highly effective reaction troubleshooting.
